Baby Formula - an Interesting History
Some mothers have always had a hard time producing breast milk. Mothers with deficient diets have and continue to be especially prone to insufficient breast milk production. For most of human history this meant the baby probably would not survive. The only viable option was to find another nursing mother that would feed the baby, something that was probably tough given the conditions of the past. Around 150 years ago things began to change.

The first commercial baby food was invented by Justus von Leibig in 1869. It was a powdered formula made from potassium bicarbonate, wheat flour, and malt flour. This was then added to warmed cow's milk. The product was widely sold in Europe. A version of the formula was sold in the US as Soluble Infant Food cost a bottle in 1869.

Henri Nestl created his own formula treating malnourished babies. By 1870 Nestle's Infant Food was selling in the US for $.50 a bottle. Nestle's formula was mixed with water and did not need the addition of any Cow's milk. This made it the first complete formula. Nestle was a good marketer and was able to successfully distribute his product worldwide.

Even though those formulas were easily available in the late 1800's the price kept most people from using them. That changed in the 1920s and 1930s, when inexpensive evaporated milk became available. Evaporated milk surpassed the commercial infant formulas in the 1930's in terms of sales, and over half of all babies in the United States were fed this in by 1950.

Improved commercial formulas had a comeback in the 1960's, almost completely replaced evaporated milk in the 1970's. Only about one quarter of all mothers were breastfeeding babies since plentiful people believed these formulas had more nutritional value. Since then these formulas have been "optimized" even more.

Since then breastfeeding has made a large comeback since its nutritional value is now believed to be superior to formula, particularly during the first few months of an infant's life. However, lack of sufficient breast milk, health problems, inadequate sucking reflex, painful nursing, lengthy mother-infant separation, work needs, all are considerations for using formula. The formulas available today are healthier than those available in the past.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Who is having the best sale on baby boy dress clothes?
I figure stores are putting dress clothes on sale since Easter is past. We dress up our son mostly every week. Only occasionally letting him wear sleepers instead. I want to stock up on baby boy dress clothes, since they're basically only sold twice a year. Have y'all found any great deals? I'd love to know!
He's in 12-18 month now. I'm gonna be looking at this size, and 18-24 month as well.

    • ANSWER:
Have you checked Children's Place? They have great prices when things aren't on sale but when you catch their clearance sales you can get real steals! They have very cute dress clothes for little boys! :)

  2. QUESTION:
How to price and group baby clothes for sale?
I have a bunch of baby boy clothes (some neutral) mainly 0-6 months but up to 18 months. How do I go about grouping and selling items? Just one big lump some? Smaller groups? What about prices?

    • ANSWER:
i would just bunch up all the sizes together and sell them that way. like a big bag of 0-3 months size and sell it for a lump some of 10 dollars maybe. i wouldn't charge too much.

  3. QUESTION:
Best way to organize baby clothes at rummage/yard sale?
We had a multi-family yard sale this past weekend and between all of us we had an overwhelming amount of baby clothes... boy and girl, newborn through 5T. We neatly folded and tagged everything... and placed all boy stuff on one table, girl stuff on the other. We even had signs taped to the table indicating sections with different sizes.

Of course, within the first 30 minutes of the sale, the table was in shambles and it was impossible to keep it in order throughout the day. It ended up being a large pile of clothes and was difficult for buyers to find anything.

In your experience, what is the best way to organize obscene amounts of baby clothes for a sale? We plan to have a sale annually and don't want to make the same mistake next time. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If you can, it's a great idea to hang the items on childen's hangers and put them on a rack. They look really cute like that, and you can charge a little more if you inlcude the hanger.

I would group them by size first, then by boy/girl. I don't know about the clothes you have, but some of the "neutral" colors may work for both. Let the buyers decide, though, there's no need to mark "boy," "girl," "neutral."

Write the sizes on the price tag as well, so it's easy to do a quick re-sort at a slow point of a sale. Maybe label the hangers instead of the clothes, or if you want to be super-organized, use different colored hangers for each size, or size category.

For shoes, put them in ziplock bags. Or even better, use colored party favor bags. They don't cost much at dollar stores, and the cuteness of the presentation may sell them!

If you have baby/toddler toys, put them out front so people will see there's kid stuff from a distance while driving down the road.

Also, as a rule of thumb for yard sales, I try not to sell anything under one dollar. If you think something is only worth 50 cents, pair it with something else and charge more. That's the best way to make the most money and get rid of the most stuff.

  4. QUESTION:

  5. QUESTION:
What to price baby clothes at Yard Sale?! HELP.?
I am having a yard sale, and I am trying to get rid of a bunch of baby boy clothes/shoes. Most are very nice, clean, no holes, no stains, etc. But there are some that are a bit older, and just used for "play" clothes. I've thought of several pricing options, and I don't know which would work best. I do NOT want to sit and put an individual price sticker on every single piece. It would take FOREVER. Plus, I don't know how much baby clothes go for these days. I don't have children, but I'm selling them for my Aunt.

    Any suggestions?!

    • ANSWER:
If you want to get rid of a lot of them fast and not individually price them, have a buy one get one free or tables with certain prices and everything on that table sells for the same price
